Fire Dampers

The main purpose of a fire damper is to prevent flame from crossing a fire barrier into other areas of the building. Fire dampers stop the spread of fire inside ductwork, if temperature rises, the fire damper closes, therefore limits the spread of fire. They are vital for in a buildings’ fire safety system, which is why its important that they are installed and operate correctly.

Installation and regular maintenance play a crucial role, if a damper fails this can result in life or death. Physical examination of the dampers should be regular to ensure they aren’t covered in dust or any other substances that may be a hinderance. They must be tested annually in accordance with British Standards, cleaning and maintenance every 12 months is a legal requirement as well. BS 9999 legislation states that all fire dampers must be tested by a fully qualified person. Having your fire dampers tested will highlight any issues that could potentially result in them failing, therefore it will be easier to rectify if the problems are caught earlier. It will also allow you to plan if they need repairing or replacing.
